Rowan

Rowan (formerly Bea) is a middle-aged (vet estimates 5 to 7 years old) refugee from a hoarding situation. She is a foxy red and white girl, even prettier in person than in these initial pictures, and on the small side, weighing in at about 35 pounds. Rowan was rescued along with several other Border Collies a couple of months ago. She was spayed yesterday, and is recovering quietly with her foster mom at home in Chapel Hill. Right now, we expect she will be available for adoption in 10 to 14 days.

Rowan is super affectionate and friendly with every human she meets. The receptionist at the vet clinic said all the staff fell in love with her while she was there. Despite the terrible situation she was rescued from (living in a filthy cage with other dogs), her foster mom believes that at some point in her life, she was someone’s loved pet. She seems to trust humans without exception. She does pace quite a bit and her tail is frequently between her legs, and she startles at noises and sometimes heads for a corner. But her gut instinct seems to be to trust, which is a very good thing.

Rowan is a quiet dog, not a barker. She rides quietly in the back of a car and pulls very little on the leash. She also sleeps happily in a crate at night and has not had any accidents in the house.

Rowan gets along OK with all the dogs she’s met, but doesn’t really try to engage much. She’d rather just cuddle with her human all the time. She recently spent 24 hours in a house with a cat and showed no signs of aggression. I think she’d be happy in a home with other dogs, or as an only pet too. She does try to insist on monopolizing my attention, but is getting used to sharing me, too.

Rowan has gone for a couple of long walks and showed interest in everything around her. She had no negative reaction to bicycles, cars, or other dogs and people. She loves water and made a beeline for every streamlet and puddle.

She is learning to sit and not jump on people. It helps that she is very treat and food oriented! We expect she will be easy to train.
