CBCR courtesy lists dogs for individual owners, other rescues, and shelters wishing to place their Border Collies or Border Collie-mixes themselves. These dogs are not in the CBCR program. Biography: Oreo is a 6-year-old, 60 lb, short-haired male Border Collie in Garner, NC. He is neutered, microchipped, crate-trained, and fully vaccinated. He is sweet and friendly with everyone, including strangers — bright, extremely coordinated, and happiest with training, structured play, and mental work. He knows basic commands and works well in short sessions.

He has a Border Collie’s drive and does best with daily exercise and training, but because of an exercise-related wobble (see medical notes) he is not a candidate for intense repetitive sport such as long fetch sessions, agility, or flyball.

He is obsessive about balls and anything with wheels (cars, bikes, etc.). He has been taught to lie down when he sees a car; his new owner will need to keep that training in place. He needs a fenced yard and should not be off-leash near traffic.

He can run with a person and has done that well. Biking does not work. If someone is on a bike, he may run in front of it to get it to stop; he treats that as a game. He does not nip, and he has never broken skin.

He is too eager when he gets going and may step on small children, so he is not a fit for toddlers or little kids. He is fine with larger kids who can run and play soccer with him.

He will steal food from counters, tables, or trash if he can. He can be protective of toys around other dogs, so we recommend an only-dog home. He is untested with cats.

Does the dog have any medical issues? Yes. Healthy at rest. No other known medical issues besides an exercise limitation. On hot days, after a stretch of fetch or other continuous hard play, Oreo can become wobbly and must be stopped. We move him to shade or air-conditioning, give water, and make him rest. He returns to normal with no leftover stiffness or lameness. He will keep going if allowed, so water must be available at all times, indoors and out. This pattern is consistent with Border Collie Collapse (BCC / “the wobbles”). It is manageable when high-intensity fetch stays short in the heat and the owner stops the game at the first wobble. He has run with a person without a problem; the issue is prolonged hard fetch, especially in heat, not an ordinary jog. Veterinary records are available; we can ask our vet for a note if needed.

Reason for re-homing? We cannot give Oreo the time, structured training, and closely monitored exercise he needs. Work hours are long, and our family situation is changing. We want him with an experienced owner who can meet those needs and keep him safe during play.
