Lily

Lily is a lilac (dilute red) tri-color Border Collie.  That coloration is fairly rare and may have led to her misfortune.  For three to five years, she was confined and used as a breeder, not a pet, purely a commodity.  She obviously did not produce the type of pups that her owner was wishing for, because eventually she was chucked out and abandoned in a rural part of eastern Wake County, NC.  Fortunately, Lily and another little discarded female Border Collie were found by a good Samaritan who took care of them until they could be moved into a better situation.  Lily’s companion was eventually adopted and Lily came to the Carolina Border Collie Rescue.

She was in pretty rough shape.  She had fleas and or mange mites that made her so itchy she couldn’t stop scratching.  Once treated for her itches, she slept for about two weeks until she felt well enough to move forward.

What emerged was a beautiful Border Collie.  Lily has been spayed, had some necessary dental work done and is all up to date with veterinary care.  She weighs about 38 lbs.  She has had a couple months to run with the other dogs, discover her Border Collie self and develop some confidence.   Thanks go to the other dogs at our place, for teaching her that “life is good”.

Lily will always need a patient, understanding human in her life.  She comes with a history that we wish we could blink away, but we can’t.   She doesn’t seem to have a strong prey drive but she definitely has a substantial herding drive and a beautiful little outrun.  She has a pretty nice recall to “Lily” (a name that she has only had for a couple months).  I can’t explain it, but she is completely house trained, hasn’t had a single accident and she learned to use the dog-door, seamlessly. 

Lily is sound sensitive, has a dislike of thunderstorms, and may flinch from unexpected movements or sounds.   With a little reassurance she has learned to cope with the sound of the coffee grinder (very loud) first thing in the morning, so I have confidence that she will eventually learn that there are other strange sounds and movements that don’t need to be frightening.

Her activity level is “active companion”.  Another dog in the household would be great, especially one who could help her build confidence, but more than anything, a human or some humans who valued her and treated her like a beloved member of the family, would serve very well indeed.
