We adopted Jax in August 2022 as a 9 month old neutered puppy from a rescue organization in New York City. He was rescued from rural Kentucky by an agency that brought him to New York, where we adopted him, unaware of his breed makeup. While we were living there, he developed obsessive behaviors as a result of not having enough space to run. We spent a lot of time training him, acclimating him to other dogs and people with long walks and play sessions.
Strenghs: Jax is a great dog – loyal, playful, cuddly, and always ready for an adventure. We’ve taken him on many off-leash hikes and, while his recall does need some work, he’s never strayed too far away. His inner Lab really comes out encounters a body of water because he loves to swim – pools, lakes, creeks, the ocean.being great around infants, toddlers, and other dogs. Fireworks and storms do not seem to bother him unless the thunder sounds too much like a knock on the door. Jax is fully potty trained and knows the tricks of “touch”, “shake”, “wait”, and “find it”. He loves going out for walks and unless he’s trying to chase after a cat or squirrel, is a consistently loose-leash walker. We have also discovered that he loves to run with a bike, runner, skateboarder, or other moving object. This means that in a setting where he can safely run off-leash, he’ll gladly run along with you on your activity. However, the downside to this is that if he can see cars driving by when he is off leash and playing, he will probably try to chase after them.
Challenges: When he starts feeling cooped up or stressed, he’ll go into “shadow land”, an extreme, and unhealthy, interest in patches of sun or reflections hitting the floor or wall. It’s very much like when a cat is chasing a laser pointer. We also discovered that when he’s under-exercised, he becomes restless and barks at any kind of noise outside; however, when he’s sufficiently tired like after a day of daycare, he rests soundly.
Jax needs a new home with friends he can run around and play with off-leash.
